ScholarSip Returns in Fall 2020 for its 9th Season
October 7, 2020
The Drexel University Libraries’ ScholarSip event series is set to return on December 7, 2020 for its 9th season.
As the Libraries’ longest-running event series, ScholarSip launched in 2012 as a venue to nurture Drexel’s intellectual life and build cross-campus community. ScholarSip celebrates interdisciplinary Drexel research, providing a unique, informal setting where faculty and professional staff gather together to toast the end of each academic term and exchange ideas and discuss their work.
Over the years, ScholarSip has featured in-person, “food for thought” served by speakers from almost every college and school at Drexel, beginning in 2012 with discussion of the just-opened ExCITe Center introduced by its Director, Professor Youngmoo Kim. Over the years, other ScholarSip topics have ranged from a session with Professor David Taylor from the College of Medicine on child poverty and the effects of childhood stressors, to a discussion with Professor Richardson Dilworth, College of Arts & Sciences, on the process of creating the University’s 125th anniversary book Building Drexel: The University and Its City, 1891-2016. From a different discipline, Professor Genevieve Dion, Director of the Center for Functional Fabrics, discussed her research with the 3D fabrication of textiles.
The 9th season will feature equally thought-provoking—and certainly timely—sessions that address the theme Responding to COVID-19 through Research and Scientific Problem-Solving. During each of the three sessions—all to be held remotely via Zoom—distinguished Drexel researchers with varying backgrounds will offer “food for thought” on COVID-19 research topics and how they have responded to the pandemic both through original research and through adapting existing procedures to address its effects on various communities.
While all attendees may not experience the serendipitous conversations that ScholarSip is so well-known for, the Libraries plans to take advantage of Zoom breakout groups to recreate similar conversations online. Utilizing Zoom for the events also makes it possible for the Libraries to extend the invitation to this year’s ScholarSip event series to people outside the Drexel community – something not possible in the past. The Libraries is excited to connect others from around the country (and the world) with the Drexel community and research.
